Install U.S. Cupcake, without root

New postby ShadowFan2008 on Sat May 23, 2009 9:50 pm

Here's the easy correct way to download/install the latest U.S. 1.5 Cupcake Android OS on your G1.

Download the US 1.5 (Cupcake) Android OS here.
http://android-roms.googlecode.com/file ... 1386de.zip
[Found on trusted GOOGLE site http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/downloads/list ]
Don't download from Slim Shady sites. 8-)

If you see the following webpage show up on Internet Explorer, don't be alarmed.
Simply double-click on Continue to this website (not recommended) link.

Error1.jpg

Click SAVE button.
SAVEbutton.JPG

Rename file name as: update
Do not add any capital letters to the file name.
Do NOT rename the file to update.zip
Simply rename the file name update and click SAVE button.

Now copy the update(folder) to your SD card.
Yes the complete folder named update, do not unzip it.
Do not place it within any other folders on your SD card or it won't be found by your G1.

Plug-In your G1 to its AC adapter.
During any OS update, it uses a lot of battery juice.
You don't want to risk bricking your G1 if your battery dies.

1)Power-off your G1
2)While holding-down the HOME button, Power-ON your G1.
3)When you see the yellow triangle, hold down the ATL and the L key at the same time, then release.
WAIT for a few seconds... Ignore any odd error screens...
4)then hold down the ALT and the S key at the same time. then release.
WAIT...
5)When your G1 prompts you to "REBOOT YOUR PHONE", Press HOME & BACK(not power) at the same time and then release.
6)You'll notice it says installing Radio(thats normal and fine)
7)You'll see it reboot like 2 times then you'll see the new ANDROID splash screen.

After your G1 reboots to the regular home screen or lock screen,
give your G1 a minute before touching the screen or any buttons, so it can adjust to the new OS.

Then go to Settings, then Data synchronization, then uncheck auto-sync, then re-check auto-sync.
Allow it to upload all your contact, gmail and calendar information before touching your screen or any buttons.

If you're not rooted, then YES you will continue to receive OTA updates. :D

Enjoy the update. Send your non-iPhone friends a SlideShow TextMessage with Music or Voice.

Glad you liked the tutorial that I created (using some info from other sites).

Unfortunately some people don't always state correct information in the correct order, which leads to bricking or frustration.
Such as those who say remame the file to update.zip, which ends up naming the file update.zip.zip (which the G1 won't find).
Little details are important...

I created the screen shots.
I added a lot of the clear detail, etc.
I try not to leave out any information, but update it if someone points out something.
I haven't found any tutorials that are as clear as mine.
I try to make it easy for a novice to follow my directions. :geek:

I don't really think its possible to brick your device unless you flash the New SPL or pull your battery out during update a firmware or radio.

Oh, so THAT'S what everyone did to brick their G1's in all the forums I've been reading.
Thanks for that information...
